Program Overview

Sponsored by ExxonMobil, this scholarship is awarded to high achieving Black students enrolled in engineering programs at accredited universities or colleges. Eligible students have a 3.5 GPA at the time of application, demonstrate academic excellence, leadership, a commitment to community involvement and must be pursuing a degree in one of the following engineering disciplines: Chemical, Mechanical, Civil or Electrical Engineering. This scholarship opportunity is a team-based scholarship open to teams consisting of a maximum of three rising sophomores and/or juniors currently classified as freshmen and sophomores at the time of their application submission.

Scholarship Details

The first-place team will receive a $25,000 scholarship and will be recognized during The Executive Leadership Council’s 2021 Recognition Gala in October. The second-place team will receive a $17,500 scholarship and the third-place team will receive a $10,000 scholarship. The scholarship will be disbursed in equal amounts per team member. The scholarship per team member will be paid directly to the awardee’s college/university.

2021 Business Case Topic

Interested teams are invited to develop and present strategies and solutions to help American corporations build and sustain a diverse pool of STEM talent. Teams should focus on recommendations to grow talent domestically, particularly among women and minorities, to meet current and future workforce needs. Teams should develop strategies for increasing the number of college graduates with STEM degrees.

BigCo, a global oil and gas company, aims to increase and maintain the talent pipeline of Black engineers into the business to improve representation and inclusion of diverse talent. Teams should analyze the problem and recommend solutions and methods to close the talent pipeline and diversity gaps. Key focus points should include talent recruitment and early career retention. In addition, teams should highlight the top 1-3 engineering challenges that BigCo should address and explain why a diverse workforce would lead to better solutions. Teams will be assessed on critical thinking, analytical and presentation skills.
